One of the problems facing all writers who work in digital and multimedia projects where, to date, content has been available for free over the internet is this: how to make money from the creative use of new media. One of the aims of our other on-going project ‘Inanimate Alice’ is to find a way to generate revenue from it (to date that project has been funded via private money and prize money). We’d like to try out a few experiments in monetisation through ‘Flight Paths’ as well, but we have no idea what those experiments might be - more on that when our ideas are more developed.

One idea is to turn the project into a an NPO and then simply ask for donations from communities and subscribers. Another route is to make the novel subscription based but with that you end up limiting your audience to those who are willing to pay.

No question that this is going to be THE question for internet works of art such as this. It is something I am not specifically addressing in my thesis, as I am in no way an economics major, but it matters none the less. In my opinion and I know that I am very much the optimist, donations should do the trick. When people see the incredible work going on and when those people are then shown the time and effort taken to produce it, they will want to support.

Lastly, this is also the reason universities and private foundations exist, to fund work such as this.

In my humble opinion it is not good to charge but it can’t be provided without some kind of financial backing, it truly is a catch-22 right now.

Absolutely a catch-22. We are lucky for the time being, in that we do have funding for Chris and I to work on this project this year.

I’m interested in the idea of donations - I’d like to try that with something at some stage.
